My Story
Years ago, when I was living in a new town and didn’t know a soul, I started walking as a way to get to know the town and people.
After a few weeks, I realized that I had lost both weight and inches, all without changing anything else.
Walking continues to be my go-to form of getting and remaining healthy.
No matter how many times I join a gym or commit to some other way of getting into shape, I always return to walking.
Neglecting to walk for too many days in a row takes a toll on both my mental and physical health.
According to Harvard Health Publishing, walking ranks in the top five of the best exercises you can ever do.
It’s free to walk.
The only investment necessary to start walking for exercise is a good set of walking shoes. And chances are, you have a pair sitting in your closet.
There are no membership fees, dues, annual commitments, or purchase of pricey home gym equipment.
Put your feet in a pair of walking shoes and you’re set to go.
Walking is convenient.
The nooks and crannies of your life are perfect for working in a few steps here and there.
Walk on your lunch hour, before work, after work, and even during work!
Just this week, I looked up to see a coworker walking up and down the hall.
She was getting her steps in on her break and it was too cold to go outside.
If there’s no convenient place to walk, walk in place or through the house or office.
A good walking routine is as easy or difficult to as you like.
Slow-walk around the neighborhood, or speed walk through town.
The degree of difficulty is entirely up to you.
Add wrist or ankle weights to rev up the routine.
The simple act of walking has been shown to provide a laundry list of health benefits.
Your physical health will thank you.
Walking has been shown to strengthen bones, improve cholesterol levels, keep blood pressure regulated, and lower your risk for a number of diseases (diabetes and heart disease, for example).
Your mental health will thank you as well.
A number of studies have shown that walking and other physical activities can improve memory and resist age-related memory loss.
My cousin Katy and I often walk together. We refer to it aa therapy by walking.
