My Story
Realizing the amount of time that I wasted during random minutes of waiting was like coming out of a fog.
Typically, when I have a random minute of waiting, my phone is my go-to diversion.
Unfortunately, all too often, I go down a rabbit hole and stay glued to my phone way past the end of the random minute.
One day, while waiting for my toast to pop, instead of scrolling, I decided to see how much I could tidy up prior to the toast popping.
Since I have a definite kitchen cleaning process, I started by clearing one countertop.
Amazingly, by the time the toast popped, most of my kitchen countertops were clean.
Since that time, mining random minutes has become something of a game to me.
Instead of impatiently scrolling my phone and tapping my foot, anytime I have a random minute, I intentionally look for a small task to fill the gap.
Random minutes occur all day, every day.
In addition to waiting for the toast to pop, we wait for the microwave to ding, the water to get hot, or the soup to boil.
And that’s just in the kitchen.
Random minutes occur in our houses, our cars, at work, and in lines at the grocery store.
We spend time waiting on hold and waiting for our name to be called at the doctor, and dentist.
There are a lot of random minutes on any given day.
Hence, the phones.
There is an alternative!
Turn those random minutes into golden opportunities.
Instead of waiting impatiently, or checking out the latest social media post, start mining those minutes.
Think of all the things you can do in just a couple of random minutes.
Clean one countertop, pick up a towel, wash a dish, you get the picture.
No time to exercise? Use your minute to walk in place or do a couple of side stretches.
If you are stuck somewhere and your phone is your only option, delete a few unwanted photos.
While most people abhor waiting at the doctor’s office, I look forward to it.
As an avid reader, I look forward to any stretch of time when I can read uninterrupted.
My Kindle Paperwhite is my go-to form of reading, and I carry it everywhere.
If you’re stuck in traffic, I feel your frustration.
Since you can’t change the situation, use the time to tune into a podcast you’ve been meaning to listen to.
The list of things you can do in mere minutes is limitless.
And the results are so much more gratifying than another three minutes of mindless scrolling.
So, if your default go-to diversion during random minutes is scrolling, there are better options.
You may not think those minutes are worth much, but it turns out they are priceless.
Look for them, mine them, and enjoy the rewards they offer.
