My Story

Getting up and out the door on time in the morning is critical to my schedule.

In an ideal world, I would pick out my clothes the evening before.

Realistically, I often have only minutes to open the closet and choose something to wear.

Here’s what I’ve realized; Clothes you can’t see will not get worn.  No matter how cute, expensive, or how much you love it, unseen equals unworn.

A seasonal closet reset clears the clutter and allows you to see new possibilities without ever stepping foot in a store.

A seasonal closet reset can be quick and easy.  Don’t let yourself make it more difficult than it needs to be.

Getting Started

Piece by piece, take out every piece of clothing hanging in your closet.

As you remove them from your closet, place each garment into one of four piles.

Current Season

Clothes that are in season and will be worn for the next few months get placed in the current season pile.

Out of Season

Out of season garments get placed in an out of season pile.

Donate

Items to be donated don’t get an actual pile.  Instead, they get a bag or box that will be taken directly to your donation place of choice.

Be ruthless.  Is there is something you’re hanging on to “just in case”?  If so, it’s creating closet clutter.

If you honestly can’t decide, put it with the out of season clothes and put off making the decision until the next seasonal closet reset.

My donation place of choice is still Goodwill.  You can read why here.

Repair

Repairs gets its own separate pile.

There is no point in placing a garment in any pile if it needs repaired.

If, realistically, you will never get it repaired, toss it.

Congratulations, you have completed the first step in your quick and easy seasonal closet reset.

Moving On

Pick a pile and get moving.

It doesn’t matter which pile you pick as long as you keep the momentum going.

Current Season

Piece by piece return current season garments to the closet.

Take the time to organize them in a way that works for you.

Sections work for my brain.

I prefer work clothes as a section and casual clothes in a different section.

If you’re working with very limited space, this still works.  In fact, organizing clothes helps make the most of limited space.

Out of Season

If you have a spare closet, lucky you.  Simply move out of season clothes to the spare closet.

Otherwise, pack them up in boxes, or some kind of storage container to store until you’re ready to swap again.

If you plan on purchasing storage containers, vacuum seal bags are a great option.

If you are lacking storage, put out of season garments in totes, and stack them on the floor of the closet.  At least they are out of sight out of mind for the time being.

Donations

Make it a priority to deliver anything to be donated.

Otherwise, they will end up dumped and mixed back with your regular clothes, and you will have created a bigger mess.

Repairs

Either make the repairs yourself or take them to someone who can do it for you.

If neither is a realistic option, don’t hang on to them.  It’s time to let them go.

Leaving clothes that need to be repaired on the back of a rocker for months on end does not achieve the purpose.  (I know this firsthand).

And that’s all there is to it.

If you have ever stood in front of your closet and complained, “I have nothing to wear”, a seasonal closet reset will open your eyes to all the possibilities hiding in plain sight.
