Consumable Gifts! The Answer to Too Much Stuff!

Do you want to give a gift that doesn’t become part of someone’s too much stuff problem?

Consumable gifts are the solution!

These are gifts that are opened, appreciated, enjoyed, and eventually used up.

If you want to give a gift without contributing to someone’s clutter, think consumable.

My story

On a recent girls’ trip to Lancaster PA, I was on a mission to knock out as much of my Christmas shopping as possible.

There was one hard-to-buy for person on my list that was causing me a mental struggle.

My cousin Katy advised me to think consumable (if I recall correctly, her actual words were, “consumable, baby, consumable!”)

Apparently she has been intentionally seeking out consumable gifts for quite a while.

Her advice was to seek out gifts that would be enjoyed, but eventually consumed, eliminating the risk of adding to anyone’s collection of too much stuff.

I loved the idea and ended up purchasing a collection of locally made jams and jellies as my consumable gift.

A seed was planted, and I have started thinking intentionally about possible consumable gift possibilities as I shop for Christmas.

If you’re stuck for a gift idea, or you simply want to give a gift that doesn’t become clutter, focus on consumable gifts.

It’s surprising how many consumable gift possibilities there are once you focus on looking for them.

Food is the most obvious consumable gift idea.

Beyond the traditional fruit basket or plate of baked goods, there are countless ways to give the gift of food.

Meal baskets, snack baskets, or a basket of unusual spices for the cook on your list.

Food possibilities abound!

A lot of the best finds come from small specialty shops, although, if you’re really looking they can be found anywhere you shop.

When you are intentional about giving the gift of food, ideas will literally jump off the shelves at you when you’re shopping.

One of my best finds in Lancaster was a gift bag of gourmet, multi-colored pasta shells.  It may not taste any better than ordinary pasta, but it sure does look pretty.  Adding a jar of locally made marinara sauce, and some artisan bread turned it into a delightful meal basket gift.

Food makes great consumable gifts for kids too!

I just gave our oldest grandson his birthday bag complete with some of his favorite snacks.

Kids like to eat too.  Just not the typical fare of adults!

Think snacks and fun foods that may not be allowed on the daily.

When shopping for food, keep in mind food allergies and restrictions when possible.

There is a risk that the recipient won’t like, or be able to eat, the gift you purchased.

The truth is that’s a risk with any gift.  Hopefully, in the case of food, the gift will simply be passed on to someone else to enjoy.

Bath and body gift ideas make great consumable gifts.

As with food, the possibilities are almost endless.

Shower gels, bath bombs, sugar scrubs, or anything that makes a bath or shower feel more like a pampering event.

Shop small businesses.  One of my standard gifts for our adult daughters is a locally made sugar scrub and soap set purchased from a small, locally owned business.

Kids like bath and body gifts too.

Turn bath time into an event.

Have you walked down the kids’ bath aisle in Wal-Mart?

The sheer number of consumable bath items for kids is amazing.

Do you remember Silly String?  It’s available in soap form.  And let me tell you what, kids love it!

Arts and Crafts Kits provide hours of entertainment and are a fantastic consumable gift idea.

Typically, I think of arts and crafts items as being for kids.

That’s probably because there’s not a crafty bone in my body.

However, there’s a wide variety of arts and crafts kits for kids, and adults,  of every age.  They are easy to locate both online or in stores.

The possibilities for giving consumable gifts is basically unlimited.

Train yourself to scope out gift ideas any and every time you shop.

Thinking consumable makes gift giving so much easier, and it’s not limited to Christmas either!

Do you want to give a nice gift without contributing to someone’s problem with too much stuff?

Think consumable!
