Do you avoid purchasing foaming hand soap because refill bottles of foaming hand soap are significantly more expensive than refills of regular liquid hand soap?
Ages ago, while cleaning up after a family picnic, my sister reached for my bottle of foaming hand soap, planning to use it to wash dishes.
Because it was the Dawn Original, technically it would have been fine for dishwashing.
However, because the soap had been watered down to make foaming hand soap, it’s doubtful it would have been great for washing dishes.
My sister was surprised to learn that foaming hand soap was something you could make.
Since I assumed that DIY foaming hand soap was common knowledge, I was surprised that she was surprised.
The secret to DIY foaming hand soap isn’t the soap in the bottle, it’s in the bottle itself.
Foaming soap dispensers have a special chamber that pumps air into the soap as it’s released. Without the air, foaming soap won’t foam.
Inexpensive foaming soap dispensers can be purchased, or, you can do what I did and buy a bottle of foaming soap and simply refill with your diy solution, once the bottle is empty.
Tip: Don’t spend a ton of money for a foaming soap dispenser. Every dispenser I’ve owned, both expensive and inexpensive, eventually quit working.
While there are many foaming soap recipes floating around, I prefer to keep my “recipe” basic.
If a recipe requires having out of the ordinary ingredients, it’s a sure bet that, for me, it will be a fail.
Because of that, I choose to make my foaming hand soap using the same soap with which I wash dishes. In my case, that’s the Dawn Original.
To make foaming hand soap:
Mix 1 part liquid dishwashing soap with 5 parts water
Mix well
Pour into the foaming soap dispenser
If you prefer scents or like to experiment, there are multiple ways to make scented foaming hand soap.
It may take practice to get exactly what you want but this is one time experimenting isn’t going to be expensive.
If you are one of the many people who prefer using foaming hand soap, don’t hesitate to buy it.
However, when it comes time to refill the bottle, bypass the pricey refills and make your own.
Foaming hand soap is honestly one of the easiest, least expensive DIY projects you will ever undertake.
