Would you like to increase your visibility when driving in the rain?
Driving in the rain is difficult for me. Driving in the rain at night can be downright scary.
Recently, while driving in the rain in the dark, it occurred to me that I had passed the stage of scary and was in the downright stupid category.
Seeing was so difficult that I was tempted to pull over and call Brian to come get me.
After finally making it home, I knew a return trip to the auto parts store had escalated from need to go to have to go.
Replacing my windshield wipers was a very high priority.
While windshield wipers are the first thing that comes to mind, there are quite a few things you can do to increase your visibility when driving in the rain.
One of the easiest things to do to increase your visibility when driving in the rain is to invest in a decent set of windshield wiper blades.
Previously, I had been advised to purchase inexpensive windshield wiper blades and replace them often.
On my return trip to the auto parts store, the advice was different.
I was advised that if I wanted to see well in bad weather, a good set of windshield wiper blades were crucial.
Two different people, two different opinions.
Since I considered the inexpensive wiper blades a fail, I chose to upgrade my windshield wipers.
Specifically, I chose the Rain X Silicone AdvantEdge wiper blade.
For anyone rolling their eyes and thinking, “there’s a sucker born every minute”, all I can say was there was a noticeable improvement in my ability to see while driving in the rain.
As an added FYI, most auto parts stores put windshield wiper blades on for free when you purchase them at the store.
Clean your windshield wiper blades.
Make cleaning your windshield wiper blades part of your routine auto maintenance.
Over time, dirt, grime, and debris build up, leading to streaks and smears while driving in the rain.
Cleaning windshield wiper blades extends the useful life of the blade.
How to clean windshield wiper blades.
Cleaning windshield wiper blades is a small job that doesn’t take much time.
Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield.
Dampen a cloth (I prefer microfiber) with a gentle cleanser (a small amount of soap and a bucket of water) or windshield wiper fluid.
Gently run the damp cloth up and down the blades, kind of like flossing your teeth.
Continue rinsing the cloth and wiping the blade until no more dirt and grime comes off.
Dry the blade with a clean dry cloth and put the wiper arm back in place.
Make sure the windshield is clean, both inside and out.
Dirt and grime on the outside of the windshield quickly becomes mud tracking across the windshield when mixed with rain.
Dust on both the inside and outside of the windshield increases glare and decreases visibility.
Believe it or not, cleaning the windshield doesn’t have to be difficult.

To really increase your visibility when driving in the rain, treat your windshield with a water repellent.
There are commercial products and do it yourself options.
Since I was all in when buying new windshield wipers, I picked up a can of Rain X water repellent.
I can’t speak to how the diy versions work, but the Rain X worked amazingly well.
It’s pretty cool to see the rain bead up and roll off your windshield!

Think beyond simply replacing windshield wipers!
