My Story
Sleeping is sacred to me, and falling and staying asleep has always been easy for me.
When I suddenly started having issues with both, it wasn’t pretty.
I racked my brain trying to figure out what had changed.
It finally occurred to me that, until recently, I had always gone to bed with a book in my hand.
As is my tendency, I did a quick online search to see if there was a connection between reading and sleeping.
With my suspicion confirmed, I have returned to my nightly ritual of going to sleep reading a book.
Reading may not be the cure-all for every sleeping issue, but if it contributes at all to a better night’s sleep, I’m all in.
How to elevate reading in bed into a sleep-inducing experience.
Get Ready
Make your bed, even if you make it right before you crawl in.
Climbing into a bed that has been made is much more calming than wallowing in a nest of blankets.
Making the bed is worth the tiny bit of time it takes.
Position a lamp for easy turn off.
You don’t want to have to crawl out of your comfy bed to turn off the light.
Put a lamp close enough to you so that all you need to do is reach out and turn it off.
Invest in a Reading Pillow.
Yes, they make such a thing, and I have used one for years.
Being able to comfortably sit up in bed and read makes all the difference.
When I’m ready to fall asleep, I simply set the pillow on the floor.
Plan to stay in bed.
Brush, and floss your teeth, get your glass of water. Do whatever you need to do to avoid the need to get back out of bed.
The goal of the getting ready phase is that when your eyes get droopy and you’re ready to nod off, you can simply slide down and go to sleep.
Get Set
Choose a book you will genuinely enjoy.
Stay away from things you “should” read. Instead, be sure to choose a book that will transport you to another place and time.
If a book isn’t like a mini vacation to me, it’s a deal breaker.
This is about pure and total relaxation.
Avoid screens that emit blue light.
Most e-readers and tablets emit blue light, which suppresses melatonin.
If you want to read on a tablet, choose a Kindle Paper White, which, in my opinion, is as close to a book as you can get in tablet form.
Read!
Get reading! Read until your body relaxes, and your eyes feel droopy.
When you feel yourself nod off, turn off the light, scoot down in bed, and enjoy going to sleep!
Would you like to fall asleep faster, and enjoy a better quality of sleep?
Grab a book, get ready, get set, and read!
You have nothing to lose and the possibility of a good night’s sleep to gain.
Sweet Dreams!
