Would you like to get more cleaning done in less time?

One way to make that happen is to ensure that you make cleaning convenient.

My Story

I am on a journey to revamp my cleaning routine.

For the past three decades, Saturday has been my designated cleaning day.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, that routine no longer works.

My life has changed, and I no longer have the time, or desire, to spend an entire day of every weekend marathon cleaning.

However, for my sanity, having a clean enough home is important to me.

(Do not confuse clean enough with immaculate!)

As I try and discard different routines, one thing has become evident: if I want to get more done in less time, it’s critical that I make cleaning convenient.

Figuring out what makes cleaning convenient is a journey.

My journey started when I purchased a broom for multiple areas of our home.

I was tired of traipsing from one part of the house to the other simply to retrieve a broom.

Brooms are inexpensive, and having one in multiple areas made it more convenient when I was in the middle of cleaning.

Since then, I have been intentional about looking for things I could do, or purchase, that would make cleaning more convenient.

Everyone’s journey will be unique based on their own personal cleaning preferences.

However, there are some things that make any cleaning situation easier and more convenient.

Be fanatical about picking up and putting away random items.

Nothing makes it more inconvenient to clean than having to first spend a ton of time simply picking up.

If you see something out of place as you walk through a room, grab it and put it away as you go.

Or ask the person who left it there to come take care of the problem.

Instill this life skill in your kids and you will be doing them a huge favor.

Random items are a reality.  Once a day, get everyone on board for a daily Fifteen Minute Run Through.

Make sure that everything in your house has a designated home.

Picking up and putting away is impossible if you don’t really know where something belongs.

Without an assigned home, you will simply be moving the mess from one area to another.

Have a cleaning caddy and keep it in a convenient location.

Keep all of your cleaning products together in a convenient location.

A cleaning caddy containing necessary cleaning products makes it possible to do a quick clean without having to go on a hunt to round up the necessary supplies.

If you have a large home, or multiple levels, invest in multiple cleaning caddies.

Running from upstairs to downstairs just to grab the shower cleaner and a rag is a waste of valuable time.

Speaking of cleaning supplies, keep them minimal.

I am a product junky.

However, even I have been able to pare my cleaning supplies down to the bare minimum.

A good microfiber cloth and a very small amount of product, or even plain water, can do wonders.

Buy microfiber cleaning cloths in bulk, and don’t be afraid to use them!

Keep a substantial batch in each cleaning caddy you assemble.

Use them like you would paper towels, except don’t throw them away.

Carry a small bucket with you for the sole purpose of collecting your cleaning rags as you use them.

After cleaning is complete, deposit the bucket in the laundry room.

Invest in time saving tools.

Give this some thought.

What is one of your biggest time-sucks when you are cleaning?

One thing that slowed me down and made me crazy was needing to drag my bulky sweeper from downstairs to upstairs.

After giving it a lot of thought, and borrowing my niece’s before buying, I finally took the plunge and purchased a Roomba.

It has been a game changer.

Ditto for a spin mop.

I used to spend about an hour sweeping and mopping our kitchen and dining room.

Now I sweep while I do something else and mopping takes me about fifteen minutes.

No one wants to spend the majority of their precious free time cleaning their house.

However, most of us enjoy the calm of a clean enough home.

So, what’s the answer?

Intentionally make cleaning convenient, and you will get more done in less time.

And that is truly convenient!
