One Effective Strategy to Tackle Your To Do List

Get things done

Do you have a mountain of little things cluttering up your to-do list?

My Story

One of my favorite shirts had a button go missing, months ago.  To remind myself to fix the button, I took the shirt out of my closet and draped it over the rocking chair.  It remained on the back of the rocking chair for a minimum of six months.

This past weekend, I decided that I had worked around the shirt long enough.

I made a pact with myself that if I did nothing else on Saturday, I would sew a button on the shirt.

On Saturday morning, before I started my day, I retrieved my sewing supplies and replaced the button.

The project took less than thirty minutes from start to finish.

That I had left the shirt unmended for that many months seemed absurd.

However, with all the things I have to do, getting to the smaller things sometimes seems impossible.

There is hope!

Pick One Thing.

Pick one thing is an effective strategy to tackle your to do list.

Instead of getting overwhelmed and doing nothing, pick one thing and get it done.

On Saturday, I could have picked any number of things.  But I wanted to be able to wear the shirt.  So, I chose to replace the button.

The shirt was my one thing.

Make it work.

Schedule a time to get it done.

Our lives are dictated by our calendars.

Make an appointment with yourself.

If I had scheduled an appointment with a seamstress, I would have kept the appointment.

Instead, I scheduled an appointment with myself.

Make it a priority.

Don’t wait until the end of the day hoping to find a slice of free time.

Make whatever you want to do a priority and knock it out sooner rather than later.

Have all the tools ready before the appointed day and time.

Success depends on having what you need to get the job done.

Make sure to have all the necessary supplies prior to the designated time.

If the one thing is potting plants, ensure that the necessary pots and dirt are on hand.

If washing windows is the one thing, have the supplies ready to go.

Do you have a mountain of little things cluttering up your to-do list?

Don’t get overwhelmed.

Instead, pick one thing and get started.

And reduce that mountain to a manageable mole hill.
