My Story
Ages ago, when eReaders were first becoming a thing, Brian bought me a Kindle Paperwhite as a Christmas gift.
It was a nice gesture, but I was a lover of real books. Therefore, it languished in the box for at least a year.
Until one evening I didn’t have a new book to read. Reading is like breathing to me.
So, I spent a little bit of time setting up the new Kindle, downloaded my first digital book, and I was hooked!!!!
A habit was formed. And as with all habits, this one came complete with a nice little price tag. Buying books, even digital books, is not cheap.
But unlike most habits, I can continue to indulge without incurring any expense.
All thanks to my local public library and the resources they provide free of charge.
If you want to enjoy free digital books, check out the website of your local public library.
Note: borrowing books from the public library, digital and otherwise, requires that you have a library card. If you don’t have one, call or visit your library to see how to go about getting one.
Look for a section called something like downloadable and streaming resources.
After visiting the websites of multiple public libraries, I can tell you that, for sure, no two will be called the same thing or found in the same place!
Prepare to be surprised at all the resources the library offers.
On most public library sites I visited, if there were resources available to borrow digital books, it was typically Hoopla and/or Libby.
Hoopla
Hoopla is a digital media service that offers tons of titles, which may include audiobooks, movies, ebooks, television shows, music albums, and comics depending on your library’s subscription.
Libby
Libby has one of the largest digital collections you can borrow using your library card.
Both are compatible with a variety of devices. However, only Libby is compatible with a Kindle Paperwhite
Both are easy to use. With Libby, I go straight to Amazon, and download as usual, with the exception of needing to pay for the book.
If your local public library doesn’t offer one of these options, keep reading. A workaround is possible.
If your public library of choice doesn’t have an option to borrow and download free digital books, don’t despair.
Several libraries offer non-residents the option to obtain a library card.
While there is a small annual cost for the card, once you pay for the card, the resources are free.
If you happen to be an Amazon Prime member, there is an additional way to enjoy reading digital books for free.
As a Prime Member, you are probably aware of all the free movies you can watch.
Well, there are free digital books to read as well.
Click on All-Scroll to Kindle eReaders and Books-navigate to Prime Reading-find something you want to read and download as usual.

Why my eReader of choice is a Kindle Paperwhite
(This is an affiliate link, but let me tell you, I’m on my 5th Kindle Paperwhite, so it’s true love!)
Oh my, let me count the reasons!
Less eye strain-A Kindle Paperwhite uses e-ink technology that is designed to mimic the look of ink on paper resulting in less eye strain for an avid reader like me!
The font can easily be adjusted to a larger size, making any small print book easy to read.
It is small. I throw it in my purse so I can read anytime, anywhere.
No glare from the sun! Reading on the beach or by the pool is a breeze.
If you, or someone you love, loves to read, give serious consideration to the Kindle Paperwhite as your eReader of choice! (I’m on my 5th one!)
