MY STORY
Getting enough sleep is critical to my mental and physical well-being.
However, the number of hours I sleep is irrelevant if my sleep is constantly disrupted.
And lately, I have noticed that there are a number of little things creeping in that, collectively, have a negative impact on the quality of sleep I’m able to get.
From the sheet that continually pops off the corner of my bed to the power light on the tv that winks at me all night long.
There are some definite tweaks that can be made to make our bedroom more sleep friendly.
I’m working on it, but it’s an ongoing work in progress.
A few simple changes can have a big impact on the quality of sleep you are able to enjoy.
Clean your bedroom.
A clean room is a calm room, and calm is what you want to feel when you want a good night’s sleep.
Our bedroom is the last room to get any love.
Often, the feel of the room is raging mad.
If you want a calm space to retire to at the end of the day, make it a priority to keep the bedroom clean.
Make the bed.
Climbing into what amounts to a tangled nest of blankets can wreck getting a good night’s sleep.
Even if you have to make the bed right before you climb in, make the bed.
Unplug or turn off anything that results in artificial light.
Winking, blinking lights from multiple electronic devices will affect your sleep quality.
Turn them off.
Multiple electronic devices can be plugged into a surge protector so, with the push of a button all electronics can be shut off at once.
Keep your phone from becoming a sleep thief.
Turn off notifications, or turn on the do not disturb feature.
Put the phone face down so that when a notification of some sort makes its way through, the blink of the light won’t wake you up.
Invest in a decent set of sheets.
Sheets are a subject large enough to warrant their own blog post.
One hundred percent cotton is my number one choice.
It’s worth spending a little extra money to have a decent set of sheets.
Make sure you purchase a set that has corners deep enough for your mattress.
It’s maddening to wake up because the sheet pops off in the middle of the night.
Sleep in a darkened room.
Invest in room darkening window coverings.
It’s kind of a joke how often I’ve replaced the window coverings in our room.
(Unless you’re Brian, who has to install them, then it’s not so funny!)
Finally, I found a solution I love; room darkening cellular shades.
They check both boxes when it comes to looks and room darkening ability.
If, like me, you are virtually blind in the dark, use a motion detector night light.
Keep your bedroom cool.
Nothing wrecks your sleep like waking up hot and sweaty!
Keep your bedroom cool, especially at night.
Shut the register, open a window, or simply turn down the thermostat for the whole house.
You will get a better night’s sleep in a cooler room.
Mask outside noise.
White noise masks all those random noises that go bump in the night.
We have slept with a fan for so long that it’s almost impossible for me to sleep without it.
In fact, I travel with a very small, very effective desk fan.
Our daughter uses a sound machine in all of her kids’ rooms, and it’s a game changer.
