My Story
As young adults with children, my siblings and I went to our mom’s every Sunday for lunch.
As we went forth and multiplied, our numbers grew to include many people coming and going.
Because there were so many of us, mom purchased disposable plastic drinking cups for our drinking pleasure.
EXCEPT, we were not permitted to actually dispose of them.
The cups had to be washed, dried, and returned to the basement prior to all of us leaving for the day.
It was a running joke.
Fast forward to the present when our own kids are young adults, and we too went forth and multiplied.
There are many of us and keeping disposable cups on hand seems the obvious solution.
However, my pantry space is at a premium and a big bag of cups not only contributes to clutter, it takes up a large chunk of valuable real estate in the pantry.
Last year, on a whim, I purchased multiple inexpensive, reusable plastic cups to use in place of disposables.
They take up hardly any room, they were inexpensive to purchase, and they are as convenient as disposables.
Before immediately tossing the idea out with the cups, consider the benefits.
It is not necessary to store a huge bag of disposable cups.
With storage space at a premium, not having to store a big old bag of plastic cups is the biggest win.
No messy clutter from stacks of cups in the pantry.
Stackable cups take up hardly any room and can be put on the shelf along with all your everyday drinking glasses.
Buying reusables is once and done.
Once the initial purchase is made, it isn’t necessary to continue purchasing bags of cups.
There will be less trash going into the landfill.
Feel good about the fact that you aren’t contributing to the plastic problem plaquing landfills.
Every piece of plastic that doesn’t end up in the landfill is progress.
Over time, buying reusable will be less expensive.
Cost savings is probably not going to be the deciding factor in whether or not you switch to reusable plastic cups.
There’s no denying that disposable plastic cups are cheap to buy.
However, over time, not needing to replenish your stock of disposables will eventually result in a cost savings.
You can still write names on the cups.
One of the benefits of using disposables is being able to grab a Sharpie and mark the cup, keeping one person from using ten cups.
There are multiple alternatives but one of the best is a recent find.
Beverage markers (affiliate link) are made to use on glass and plastic.
They are as convenient as a Sharpie and at the end of the day, it washes off.
Washing the cups should not deter you from making the switch.
Most reusable plastic cups are top rack dishwasher safe. Just double check when you buy them.
If you don’t have a dishwasher, it takes only minutes to wash a stack of cups.
Put them on a dish towel and let them air dry.
Not having to store bags of cups is worth the few minutes it takes to wash them.
Would you like an easy way to reduce clutter and free up space in your pantry?
Make the switch from disposable to reusable cups and use that valuable shelf space for something much more worthy!
