There’s No Use Crying Over Spilled Milk!

A glass of spilled milk

What is your gut level reaction to life’s little accidents and misfortunes?

Frustration and anger will be instantly reduced when you remind yourself that life happens, and there’s no use crying over spilled milk.

Growing up, if I heard that once, I heard it a thousand times.

It’s an old-fashioned phrase, full of wisdom, worth remembering, and a seed worth planting in the next generation.

My story

This week, as I was putting on my eye shadow in my half-awake state of mind, I fumbled and dropped my very expensive, at least to me, eye shadow.

As I watched in horror, the eye shadow basically disintegrated in front of my eyes.

Just as I was working myself into a good state of self-disgust, I heard my mom’s voice in my head tell me, “There’s no use crying over spilled milk.”

There’s no use crying over spilled milk, and there’s no use crying over ruined eyeshadow.

What’s done is done (another mom saying).

Salvage what you can and move on.

What does the phrase, there’s no use crying over spilled milk, actually mean?

It’s an old-fashioned way of stating that there’s no point in being upset about something that has already happened and can’t be undone.

It’s a phrase that dates back to the 1600’s and has been passed down from generation to generation.

The proverb is still as relevant and important today as it’s been for hundreds of years.

It reminds us that there’s no use dwelling on mistakes.

Instead, it encourages acceptance, learning from our mistakes , and moving forward.

It’s a great way to extend grace to ourselves and others.

Mistakes are made, and accidents happen to everyone.  No one is immune.

Telling a kid, or a parent, that there’s no use crying over spilled milk, when the milk is actually spilled, provides a wonderful teachable moment.

This is not meant to be, or should it be used as, a response to heartbreaking events.

Saying this to someone who is experiencing deep regret and concern would be perceived as callous and uncaring.

What is your gut level reaction to life’s little accidents and misfortunes?

Save yourself a lot of anger and frustration by simply remembering that there’s no use crying over spilled milk.

It can’t be changed or undone.  Accept it and move on.
