Trying to Be Consistent ~ The Struggle is Real

Be Consistent written on a chalkboard

Is there an area in your life that you know would improve if only you could be more consistent?

It’s hard to remain consistent day after day, week after week, and ultimately, year after year.

Hard, yes, but there are some little things you can do to make it easier.

My Story

My cousin Katy and I were on our afternoon walk when talk turned, once again, to the difficulty of losing and maintaining a good weight as you get older.

We agreed that the first few days, and possibly weeks, of planning and preparing meals is fairly easy to maintain.

It’s when the weeks turn into months and you realize that this is for life, that motivation wanes and momentum derails.

The idea of doing this for the rest of your life is overwhelming.

Unfortunately, that’s the commitment that’s necessary, not only reaching and maintaining an ideal weight, but for achieving almost anything.

And it’s hard!

The good news is that there are some things you can do to make being consistent a little bit easier.

Have a plan but keep it simple.

Of course, there has to be a plan.

What is it you want to do, when will you do it, what does that look like?

Keep the plan simple, otherwise it’s destined to fail.

Case in point; my sister wanted to exercise more.  She joined a gym, got up at five thirty in the morning, drove thirty minutes to the gym, and swam before starting her day.

Great plan, great results, but it got old quickly.

Now she wakes up and does ten minutes of stretching.

In the afternoon, she walks a mile, and in the evening, she jumps on the trampoline with her grandkids.

Simple and easy to maintain.  I’m guessing she will stick to it for a very long time.

Let go of the all or nothing mindset.

Instead of being either all in or all out, decide it’s ok to be mostly in.

There will be days you just can’t maintain the routine.

That’s ok.  Take a break, enjoy a rest, and then get back to it.

Mostly in is better than not in at all!

(Kind of like Something is Better than Nothing!)

Don’t wait until you feel like it.

Most likely, after the honeymoon phase, you will never actually feel like doing whatever you need to do to see results.

I promise you, there isn’t a night that I ever feel like flossing my teeth.  It’s a dreadful chore.

However, I do like the idea of spending less time in the dentist’s chair.

Forget feelings and focus on results.

Is there an area in your life that would improve if only you could be more consistent?

Focus on the small things that make being consistent a little bit easier.
