My Story

While writing the post, How to Make Your Own Spreadable Butter, I came across the idea of a Butter Bell, the brand name for a type of butter crock.

Pre-refrigeration, this type of butter crock was the preferred method used by French Chefs for keeping real butter fresh and spreadable at room temperature.

Although I was intrigued, I kept putting off purchasing one.  I just couldn’t imagine that it would be that much better than an ordinary butter dish.

This past Christmas, Rachel’s gift to me was the Butter Bell that I had been wanting.

I am no longer a skeptic!

The Butter Bell is hands down the best way to keep real butter perfectly spreadable at room temperature.

If you love real butter but prefer it to be soft and spreadable at all times, prepare to fall in love with the Butter Bell.

What is a Butter Bell?

A Butter Bell is the brand name of a specific type of butter crock designed to keep real butter fresh and spreadable without refrigeration, spoilage, or odors.

How does a Butter Bell work?

A Butter Bell consists of two parts; A bell shaped lid that holds one stick of softened butter, and a base that holds a small amount of water.

When the butter filled “bell” is placed upside down in the water-filled base, it creates an airtight seal.  This seal keeps oxygen and contaminants out, allowing the butter to stay soft and spreadable at room temperature.

Does it really work?

In a word, yes.  Better than you can imagine!

When used correctly, a Butter Bell keeps butter safe, fresh, and spreadable for up to 30 days.  Simply change the water every two to three days to maintain the seal and prevent spoilage

I hear you wondering….

Will the butter fall out of the bell when turned upside down and placed in the water?

No, the butter stays firmly in the bell. (Unless you put the crock in a place that’s too warm)

Does the butter get wet?

The butter is, of course, wet when it’s immersed.  However, the water rolls off of the butter when you take the bell out of the crock.

You won’t be spreading water laced butter.

There are some best practices for using the Butter Bell.

Use softened butter to fill the bell.

Before filling the bell, allow the butter to come to room temperature.

This makes it easier to pack the butter into the bell.

Change the water every two to three days.

This maintains the correct temperature and ensures freshness.

It takes only seconds to change the water.

Use salted butter.

Although unsalted butter can be used, salt acts as a natural preservative, helping butter last longer at room temperature.

Wash between refills.

Although a Butter Bell doesn’t get greasy like a traditional butter dish, it should be washed between each new stick of butter.

Keep your Butter Bell away from heat.

Butter Bells are attractive enough to leave on the counter, and that’s honestly the best place to keep them.

Avoid placing them near the stove, any heat source, or in a hot cabinet.

Too warm temperatures will cause the butter to melt out of the bell.
